How to Display Live Loyalty Points in Klaviyo Emails

20 May 2025 · 3 min read

Why Dynamic Loyalty Balances Matter

Telling a subscriber they have loyalty points is good. Showing them the exact number of points sitting in their account right now is far better. When someone opens an email and sees they are 100 points away from a voucher, it changes their buying decision immediately.

Most ecommerce brands integrate tools like Smile.io, Stamped, or LoyaltyLion with Klaviyo, but then they stop short. They send generic reminders without showing the live balance. That is a mistake.

You can easily pull live, dynamic point balances directly into your Klaviyo campaigns and flows. Here is how to find the exact code tag you need and insert it into your emails.

Verify Your Loyalty Integration and Metrics

Before trying to pull any dynamic tags, your loyalty platform must be properly connected to Klaviyo. Head into your Klaviyo dashboard and click into the Metrics tab under Analytics.

Search for your loyalty provider, whether that is Smile, Stamped, or another app. You should see active metrics passing through into Klaviyo, such as points earned, points redeemed, or points expiring.

If you see these events recording in real time, Klaviyo is successfully receiving profile properties and custom event data from your loyalty provider. If nothing appears here, check your integration settings before moving on.

How to Find Your Exact Dynamic Tag

Every loyalty software names its data fields slightly differently. You do not need to guess the syntax or write custom code. You can find the exact tag using Klaviyo's built-in preview tool.

Create a quick test flow triggered by a metric from your loyalty provider, such as points earned or points expiring. Drop a standard text email into the flow and open the editor.

For a related breakdown, see How to build a recurring loyalty points flow in Klaviyo.

Click Preview and Test in the top right corner. In the preview panel, Klaviyo displays the complete list of dynamic properties attached to the active profile.

  • Scroll through the custom properties list until you find the balance property (for example, person|lookup:'smile_points_balance').
  • Click directly on the property name to copy the dynamic tag to your clipboard.
  • Save the flow as a draft or delete it once you have copied your tag.

Adding the Dynamic Tag to Your Emails

Once you have the dynamic tag copied, open any campaign or flow email where you want to show the balance. Paste the tag directly into a text block alongside your copy.

For more detail, see How to Use Plain Text Emails in Klaviyo for Higher Opens.

For example, you can write: "You currently have {{ person|lookup:'smile_points_balance'|default:'0' }} points available to spend."

Always include a default filter like |default:'0' at the end of your lookup tag. If a new subscriber does not have a recorded point balance yet, Klaviyo will cleanly display "0" instead of leaving a blank space or throwing a rendering error.

Best Places to Use Live Point Balances

Once you have this tag, you can use it across virtually every customer communication. In my books, consistency is what turns points into actual repeat revenue.

  • Post-Purchase Flows: Show customers their updated balance immediately after an order to plant the seed for the next purchase.
  • Winback Flows: Remind lapsed customers that they have unspent points waiting on their account.
  • Campaign Footers: Add a small live loyalty snippet in your weekly promotional campaigns for an effortless conversion lift.

Final Thoughts

Dynamic point balances turn passive loyalty members into active repeat buyers. The setup takes less than 10 minutes, but it pays off across every flow and campaign you send. If you already pay for a loyalty app, make sure you actually put that data to work inside your inbox.
