How to Build a High-Converting Klaviyo Post-Purchase Flow

11 Dec 2023 · 3 min read

The Core Trigger and Vital Flow Filters

Your post-purchase flow starts the moment a customer completes checkout. In Klaviyo, that means setting the trigger to Placed Order. This sounds elementary, but the real control comes down to your flow filters.

You must add two flow filters right at the top: Refunded Order zero times since starting this flow and Cancelled Order zero times since starting this flow. If an order gets cancelled five minutes after purchase, the last thing you want is an automated message popping up saying thank you for supporting the brand. That makes you look careless.

You will also notice this architecture does not include a transactional order confirmation. I assume Shopify or WooCommerce already handles your receipt emails. Doubling up on receipts just clutters the customer's inbox.

Plain-Text Thank You Notes for New Buyers

Once the trigger fires, set a 15-minute delay. From there, drop in a conditional split based on overall purchase history: Placed Order equals 1 overall time on one branch, and Placed Order equals 2 overall time on the other.

For these initial touches, send a plain-text email. No slick graphics, no heavy product grids, and no discount codes unless you genuinely want to test one. Write it as if it comes straight from you or the founder to the customer, thanking them directly for their support.

A plain-text note builds goodwill that branded marketing cannot replicate. If someone has bought from you 8 or 9 times, you do not keep sending them introductory thank-you notes. That is why anyone with more than two purchases skips these personal notes entirely and moves down the line.

The 30-Minute Window for Immediate Re-orders

Roughly 15 minutes after that personal note (or 30 minutes from the initial checkout), bring the paths back together for an immediate opportunity email. Customers are never hotter than the moments immediately following a purchase.

This email exists to increase customer lifetime value while your store is still top of mind. You can use this spot to offer a few distinct incentives:

  • Order bundling: Let them add another item to their package before it ships without paying extra shipping.
  • Same-day dispatch cutoffs: Encourage a quick add-on to catch the same delivery window.
  • Time-sensitive discounts: Offer a specific coupon code that expires strictly within 24 hours.

That is not aggressive. It is just smart timing.

Timed Replenishment and Category Trigger Splits

After the initial purchase window closes, insert a longer delay before your next email. In this example, we use a 10-day delay timed to send at 7:00 a.m., because customer data showed that early morning drove the highest engagement for this specific store.

You need to calculate this delay based on your product lifecycle. If a typical customer finishes a consumable product in roughly 10 days, that is when you reach out. Do not guess your consumption window. Look at your repeat purchase timing data and match it.

Once that delay passes, use trigger splits based on collections or product categories. For instance, if an order contains items from the powder category, route them down a specific path. If it contains sugar substitutes, send them down another. You can do the exact same thing with apparel by splitting men's and women's lines.

This allows you to deliver two things accurately: a reminder to replenish what they initially ordered, and a relevant cross-sell for complementary products. Selling a man a pair of women's boots because it is your overall bestseller is lazy marketing. Relevant segmentation fixes that.

Klaviyo Settings You Cannot Forget

Two technical details make or break the performance tracking of this automation. First, make sure UTM tracking is turned on across every single email in the sequence so Google Analytics attributes repeat revenue correctly.

Second, turn Smart Sending off for these post-purchase emails. These are high-priority operational and relationship-building messages. If a customer receives a regular campaign email an hour before they decide to purchase, you still want them entering this post-purchase sequence without getting suppressed by an arbitrary 16-hour window.

Final Thoughts

A post-purchase sequence should not just say thanks and walk away. When you combine simple plain-text relationship building with timely upsells and category-specific replenishment splits, this automation quickly becomes one of the highest revenue generators in your entire Klaviyo account.
