Why Plain Text Emails Belong in Your Strategy
Plain text emails are one of the most reliable tools for improving deliverability across your entire list. While beautifully designed graphic emails have their place, relying on them exclusively is a mistake.
Major mailbox providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo scan incoming messages for image-to-text ratios, tracking code weight, and code complexity. When you send a simple text message with minimal HTML, algorithms treat it like an email from a real human being. That lands your message straight into the primary tab instead of getting buried under Promotions.
Over the course of working with more than 200 ecommerce brands, I have seen text-based sends generate open rates as high as 71%. Even after accounting for machine opens, the engagement lift is real. Here is the thing: subscribers notice when you suddenly drop the glossy imagery and talk to them directly.
Shocking Subscriber Inboxes with Plain Text Campaigns
The first place I use plain text is in regular broadcast campaigns to break the visual tempo. If every single campaign you send is a heavy graphic template, subscribers develop inbox blindness. They glaze over the design, scroll past the hero image, and delete the message without reading.
Dropping a plain text email into your weekly schedule completely breaks that pattern. It looks urgent, personal, and important. I use this format primarily for time-sensitive announcements, flash sales, or critical shipping updates.
Keep the format stripped back. A short opening line, two sentences explaining the offer (such as a 20% flash discount ending tonight), and a single direct link or text call to action. Do not add banners, decorative dividers, or social media icons. The power of the email comes entirely from its simplicity.
The 20-Minute Post-Purchase Founder Thank You Flow
The second essential place for plain text is inside your automated flows, specifically the post-purchase thank you automation. Rather than hitting customers with another sales pitch immediately after they buy, send a personal note from the business founder.
Here is how we set this up inside Klaviyo:
- Trigger the flow on the Placed Order event.
- Add a conditional split based on order count (Order Count = 1).
- Set a time delay of exactly 20 minutes before sending the first email.
That 20-minute delay is deliberate. Shopify automatically sends out a transactional order confirmation email right away. Waiting 20 minutes ensures your personal note does not clash with the receipt, while making the timing feel organic (as if a real founder sat down at their laptop and typed the message out).
The copy should focus entirely on appreciation. Thank the customer for supporting an independent business, share a quick sentence on your brand mission, and invite them to reply directly if they have any questions. These emails do not sell products. They build genuine brand affinity that increases repeat purchase rates when you cross-sell down the track.
Why You Should Stop After the Second Order
When someone places their second order, we route them down a second branch in the split and send a revised plain text message. We acknowledge their return, thank them for backing the business again, and keep the tone warm.
After the second purchase, cut the automation off. That is the rule.
The novelty of a personal founder note wears off quickly if a customer receives the exact same message on their third, fourth, and fifth orders. Unless you plan to write five distinct variations, sending repeated plain text thank-yous feels automated and cheap. Two meaningful touches establish the relationship without overstaying your welcome.
Configuring Sender Names and Reply-To Addresses in Klaviyo
Authenticity fails if your technical settings give the game away. Sending a personal letter from "Support Team" or "Brand Name Marketing" destroys the illusion before the subscriber even reads line one.
Whenever you build a plain text campaign or automated flow in Klaviyo, adjust two key fields:
- Sender Name: Use a real person's name, or a combination like "Gavin | Founder at In-box".
- Sender Email: Use a recognisable address rather than a generic no-reply inbox.
If you are worried about flooding a founder's personal mailbox with customer queries, uncheck the "Use as reply-to" box in Klaviyo. Set the reply-to address to your dedicated customer service desk. Your support team can handle incoming replies seamlessly, while the customer still experiences a personal touch from the founder.
Final Thoughts
Plain text emails are not a replacement for your core creative assets, but an intentional contrast against them. Used sparingly for high-priority campaigns and early post-purchase flows, they lift deliverability, boost engagement, and create customer loyalty that glossy graphics cannot match.
