Why Asking for SMS on Your Signup Form Kills Sales

1 Jun 2025 · 3 min read

The Problem with Multi-Step SMS Popups

SMS marketing is heavily overhyped right now. Most ecommerce brands try to capture SMS consent at completely the wrong stage of the customer journey. They sacrifice immediate on-site conversion rates just to acquire a phone number they do not even know how to use yet.

The standard playbook tells you to create a multi-step popup. Step one asks for the email address, step two asks for a mobile number, and step three displays the discount code. It sounds harmless because you technically already captured the email on step one. That is a mistake.

Why Form Drop-Off Destroys Your Conversion Rate

When you introduce an SMS step immediately after the email field, you create massive friction. Even if you include a polite "No thanks" or skip button, visitors hesitate. In our split tests, adding an SMS step causes up to a 45% increase in form drop-off before reaching the success screen.

When a visitor abandons the popup on the SMS step, they never see the discount code you promised them. They do not get the instant gratification of copying the coupon to their clipboard. As a result, your on-site conversion rate drops, and your total store revenue dips right along with it.

You should never compromise immediate purchase intent for the sake of collecting secondary contact data.

The Clean Email-First Signup Flow

Your primary popup needs to do one job: turn an anonymous visitor into an email subscriber and push them toward their first purchase. Keep the form dead simple by asking for the email address alone. Once they enter it, show the discount code on the success screen instantly.

One thing I like to do is build separate desktop and mobile versions of this initial form. This allows us to track device-specific behaviour and make micro-adjustments to layout and sizing without breaking the experience on mobile screens. The cleaner the journey, the faster they buy.

The 3-Day Delayed SMS Strategy

I am not saying you should avoid capturing SMS consent entirely. You just need to ask at the right time. Brands generating over $100,000 a month with their retention marketing use a delayed, segmented approach to build their SMS lists.

Here is how to set it up properly in Klaviyo:

  • Create a dedicated SMS popup completely separate from your welcome popup.
  • Target only users who belong to a specific segment: subscribers who have been on your email list for at least 3 days and have not yet opted into SMS.
  • Offer an incentive tailored to VIP perks, early product access, or exclusive flash sales.

By delaying the ask by 3 days, you protect your initial store conversion rates. The customer has already received their initial welcome discount, browsed your store, and entered your ecosystem without unnecessary roadblocks.

Where SMS Actually Delivers Value

SMS is an invasive channel, and consumers treat it as such. If you blast people with generic weekly campaigns, they will unsubscribe immediately or mark your messages as spam. Phone numbers are best reserved for high-impact moments that demand urgency.

Save your SMS sends for major sales events, VIP product drops, and critical back-in-stock alerts. When you treat the channel with respect and acquire consent after establishing trust, your return on investment will be significantly higher.

Final Thoughts

Stop asking for phone numbers on your main welcome popup. It creates unnecessary drop-off and hides your discount codes from buyers who were ready to check out today. Deliver the code upfront, protect your conversion rate, and capture SMS consent on day three instead.
