Why Google and Yahoo Changed the Rules
Google and Yahoo introduced strict authentication requirements for bulk senders to stop spoofing and clean up user inboxes. If you send marketing emails to Gmail or Yahoo addresses without proper records in place, your deliverability will take an immediate hit. Your campaigns will either land straight in spam or get bounced entirely.
The fix is straightforward, but you cannot skip it. You need two main items configured: a dedicated sending domain inside Klaviyo and a valid DMARC record published on your domain host.
Ignoring this is not an option.
Setting Up Your Dedicated Sending Domain in Klaviyo
By default, shared email service provider domains handle your routing. To satisfy the new inbox provider rules, you need your own dedicated sending domain so the emails clearly come from your own brand infrastructure.
Head into your Klaviyo account and click Settings in the bottom left corner. From there, navigate to Email and select the Domains tab. If you have not configured this yet, click the button to get started.
Enter your root domain (your primary website URL) along with the default sending address you use for campaigns, such as info@yourdomain.com. Klaviyo will then generate the specific DNS records you need to copy over to your domain provider.
Adding the DNS Records to Your Domain Host
Keep your Klaviyo tab open and log into wherever your DNS records live. That might be Google Domains, Cloudflare, GoDaddy, or Namecheap. The interface differs slightly depending on your host, but the underlying process is identical.
Find your domain management dashboard and look for the section labelled DNS Records or Custom Records. You will need to copy each record provided by Klaviyo and paste it into your host:
- Create the required CNAME and TXT records as displayed in your Klaviyo dashboard.
- Ensure the host names and record values match the Klaviyo table exactly.
- Leave the TTL (Time to Live) set to the default or 3600 seconds (1 hour).
Once pasted, save the records on your host and click verify inside Klaviyo. Propagation can take anywhere from a few minutes to roughly 24 hours.
Configuring Your DMARC Record
A dedicated domain alone is only half the requirement. Google and Yahoo also require a DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) record published on your root domain.
In your DNS manager, add a new record with the type set to TXT. In the host name field, enter _dmarc (your domain provider will automatically append your root domain to this).
Set the TTL to 3600 and paste the following value into the text field, replacing the placeholder with your actual contact email address:
v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:youremail@yourdomain.com
Setting the policy to p=none allows you to satisfy the mailbox provider requirements immediately without risking accidental rejections while you monitor your traffic reports.
Verifying Your Setup with MXToolbox
Once your DNS records and DMARC entry are published, you want to verify that external mail servers can read them properly. Do not simply guess and hope for the best.
Go to MXToolbox.com and open their SuperTool feature. Enter your root domain and run a DMARC lookup. The tool will check your domain against global DNS records and return a status report.
You want to see green checkmarks confirming that your DMARC record and DNS records are fully published. A warning stating that quarantine or reject policies are not enabled is completely fine for this baseline setup, as long as there are no red error icons.
