Why Gmail Puts Your Emails in the Promotions Tab
The Promotions tab is where marketing emails go to be ignored. If your subscribers rarely click into it, your open rates suffer and your revenue drops. Getting out of it completely is impossible for standard ecommerce campaigns, but you can systematically tilt the odds back in your favour.
Email clients like Gmail scan incoming messages for specific patterns before deciding where to drop them. The primary triggers are your image-to-text ratio, commercial language, and code structure. When an inbox provider sees multiple stacked image blocks, discount-heavy copy, and standard marketing HTML templates, it immediately files the message under Promotions.
Your historical sender reputation dictates the rest. If your previous sends were flagged as promotional and generated mediocre engagement, future emails automatically follow the same path.
How Inbox Placement Actually Works
Here is the thing about inbox algorithms: categorization is partially personalised to each individual recipient. If one customer regularly opens your emails and drags them into their Primary tab, Gmail learns that your brand matters to that specific user. Future sends to that person will land in Primary.
That individual action also feeds back into Gmail's broader domain scoring. The more people who pull your messages out of Promotions, the stronger the signal becomes across your entire subscriber list.
You will never get 100% of your graphic marketing campaigns into Primary. That is simply not how modern inbox providers operate. The goal is to build enough positive domain reputation through specific high-engagement touchpoints so your key messages actually get seen.
Send Plain-Text Campaigns Once a Month
One of the fastest ways to break the promotional pattern is to strip out the marketing template entirely. Switch to a plain-text email in Klaviyo, write directly to the subscriber as a founder or store manager, and leave out the hero banners and product grids.
Gmail inspects plain-text emails and sees none of the standard commercial markers. The message looks like a one-to-one note between two people, which makes it far more likely to land directly in Primary.
I recommend mixing one plain-text campaign into your schedule roughly once per month. When subscribers open and reply to that stripped-back email, they generate the positive engagement signals your domain desperately needs. Just do not overdo it. If you send only plain-text sales pitches, inbox filters will eventually classify your plain text as promotional too.
Use Plain-Text at the Start of Your Automations
Your flows offer the cleanest opportunity to train inbox providers right from day one. In my books, the very first email in your welcome series is the best candidate for a plain-text format.
When a new subscriber joins your list, their intent is at its highest. Sending an image-heavy catalog blast right away risks dropping that critical first impression straight into Promotions. Sending a personal welcome note from the founder in plain text almost always hits Primary.
- First welcome email: Send a clean text-only message setting expectations and delivering the welcome offer.
- Subsequent flow steps: Transition back to standard designed templates once the initial delivery path is established.
- Personal check-ins: Use plain-text variations for post-purchase founder check-ins or customer support touchpoints.
That initial Primary placement sets the tone for the rest of the automation sequence.
Apply for Klaviyo Transactional Email Status
Transactional emails (order confirmations, shipping updates, and account receipts) bypass standard marketing pools because they are essential communications. In Klaviyo, you can request dedicated transactional status for qualifying automated messages.
To qualify, the flow must be triggered by a specific customer metric (like Placed Order) rather than a list or segment trigger. Once Klaviyo approves the message, it gets routed through dedicated infrastructure built specifically for high-priority operational sends.
Gmail treats transactional infrastructure with a much higher level of trust, routing those messages to Primary or Updates. That clean delivery history elevates your overall sending domain reputation, which indirectly benefits your commercial campaigns.
Tighten Your Engaged Segments
No deliverability tactic will save you if you continue blasting your entire database. Inbox providers look at the percentage of recipients who actually interact with your sends. If 80% of your list ignores you, your emails go to Promotions or Spam.
You must restrict your regular campaigns to an engaged segment. For most ecommerce stores, that means subscribers who have opened or clicked within the last 30 to 60 days, or purchased within the last 90 days. Sending to fewer, higher-intent people immediately raises your open rates and signals to Gmail that your content is wanted.
That is a non-negotiable rule. Better segmentation creates better deliverability.
Final Thoughts
Landing in Promotions is a standard reality of ecommerce marketing, but sitting there permanently is avoidable. By deploying occasional plain-text campaigns, opening flows with text-only emails, securing transactional status where eligible, and trimming unengaged contacts, you can significantly improve your placement. Implement these adjustments consistently and you should see noticeable gains in placement within roughly 30 days.
