How to reduce high email bounce rates in your Klaviyo account

19 Jun 2024 · 4 min read

Diagnose where the bounces are coming from

High bounce rates destroy your sender reputation faster than almost anything else. If mailbox providers see 2% or 3% of your emails bouncing repeatedly, they assume you are sending to unverified, scraped, or stale lists. Your deliverability drops, and your revenue follows it down.

Before touching your settings, check your actual numbers. Head into your Klaviyo analytics tab and open the deliverability dashboard. Click into bounce details to see why addresses are dropping off, whether that is invalid syntax, mailbox full errors, or unclassified bounces.

If you want to pinpoint the exact problem areas, run a custom report. Go to the reports library, select deliverability by flow, and set the timeframe to the last 365 days. That report will show you instantly which automations are generating the bulk of your errors.

Add bounce filters to your automated flows

Your welcome series almost always carries your highest bounce rate. Shoppers frequently mistype their details when rushing at checkout, or they enter fake dummy addresses on a popup just to grab a 10% discount code. If you do not catch those errors on email one, they sit in your sequence and bounce on every subsequent email.

Open your welcome series and add a trigger filter at the very top. Set the condition to: what somebody has or has not done, bounced email zero times in the last 30 days. This simple rule ensures that the moment an address bounces once, Klaviyo ejects that profile from the rest of the automation.

Do this across all your core flows. It takes five minutes to apply to your abandoned cart, browse abandonment, and post-purchase sequences. That stops bad data from compounding.

Exclude recent bouncers from your campaigns

Flows are only half the battle. If a profile bounces inside a flow on Monday and you send a broadcast campaign to your whole list on Thursday, that profile is going to bounce again. You need an automated safeguard for your scheduled sends.

Create a dedicated exclusion segment named something clear, like IB Bounced 1x 30 Days (Exclude). Set the definition to: what somebody has or has not done, bounced email at least once in the last 30 days.

Add this segment to the exclusion box on every single campaign you send out. You should be sending only to engaged, healthy profiles. Excluding temporary bouncers keeps your campaign bounce rate consistently below 0.5%.

Tighten Klaviyo's soft bounce suppression rules

Klaviyo automatically suppresses a profile after a hard bounce, which happens when an address does not exist. However, soft bounces (like a full inbox or temporary server block) require seven consecutive failures before Klaviyo marks them as suppressed. In my books, seven consecutive soft bounces is far too generous.

Leaving those addresses active for weeks damages your domain health. Here is how I handle it across our client accounts. Build a segment defined as: what somebody has or has not done, bounced email is greater than 3 overall time.

Next, create a segment-triggered automation that adds a custom profile property, such as suppress equals true, whenever someone hits four total bounces. Every 30 to 45 days, filter by that property and manually suppress those profiles in bulk. That cleans the dead weight out for good.

Switch to double opt-in on your signup lists

If you have implemented all the filters above and your bounce rate remains stubborn, the issue is coming directly from your acquisition forms. Single opt-in lets anyone submit junk data straight into your live database without verification.

To fix this, go to your lists, open the main list connected to your popup forms, and navigate to the settings tab. Under consent, switch the setting from single opt-in to double opt-in. This forces new subscribers to click a confirmation link before they ever receive an automated marketing message.

Double opt-in will slightly lower your total subscriber volume. That is a fair trade-off. It is far better to collect 100 real subscribers who can open your emails than 150 contacts loaded with fake addresses that get your domain blacklisted.

Final Thoughts

Fixing high bounce rates does not require complex technical rebuilds. By adding flow filters, excluding recent bouncers from campaigns, and suppressing chronic soft bounces after four attempts, you protect your sender score. Keep your list clean, and your emails will land where they belong: in the primary inbox.
