Who Beehiiv Is Actually For
Beehiiv has become one of the most talked-about email platforms on the market, but there is plenty of confusion around who should actually be using it. At In-box, we manage Klaviyo accounts for ecommerce brands every day, but I use Beehiiv to run my own B2B newsletter list of 2,415 active subscribers.
If you run an ecommerce store, using Beehiiv is a mistake. You need granular behavioral triggers, deep Shopify integration, and complex branch splits. Beehiiv does not offer that. However, if your primary model is publishing content, building an audience, or running a media arm, it has several built-in growth levers that traditional ESPs lack.
Built-In Referral Loops That Actually Work
One of the strongest features inside Beehiiv is the native referral program. In standard marketing platforms, building a functional milestone referral engine requires third-party plugins, custom webhooks, and messy tag management. Beehiiv handles it straight out of the box.
I set up a basic tier where referring one person unlocks a ChatGPT email scripting guide, and referring three people unlocks a bundle of 639 email design templates. This single automated mechanic generated 35 verified subscribers that I would not have captured otherwise. It is completely hands-off once configured.
Paid Growth via Beehiiv Boosts
Scaling a newsletter organically is slow, which is why Beehiiv introduced Boosts. This feature functions as an internal ad exchange where you pay other newsletter creators to recommend your publication to their readers upon sign-up.
I pay roughly $2.00 per verified subscriber acquired through the Boosts network. What I like most is the reporting transparency. Beehiiv displays the ongoing engagement quality of those paid leads, showing me that these subscribers maintain a 34.62% open rate and steady click rates. You can see immediately whether the traffic you are buying is worth keeping.
Monetisation and the Native Ad Network
Monetising a traditional email list usually involves chasing brand sponsorships, negotiating rates, and manually swapping tracking links. Beehiiv has an integrated sponsorship marketplace that pairs your newsletter with relevant advertisers on a cost-per-click basis.
Advertisers on the platform frequently pay around $2.40 per click. Across my regular sends, I have generated $113.00 in passive ad revenue with minimal effort. It is not going to make you rich, but it easily offsets the monthly software fee.
Where Beehiiv Falls Flat
Despite the growth features, Beehiiv has some serious functional limitations that frustrate me weekly. The biggest operational headache is that you cannot schedule campaigns based on the recipient's local time zone. When I schedule an email for 1:00 PM New Zealand time, it blasts the entire database simultaneously, landing in the middle of the night for overseas readers.
The automation engine is also remarkably thin. You can set up basic linear automations (like a standard welcome sequence or a survey trigger), but you cannot execute advanced segmentation based on multi-variable purchasing behavior or website activity. For complex customer journeys, the flow builder simply lacks horsepower.
Final Thoughts
Beehiiv is a fantastic purpose-built tool for content creators, publishers, and B2B newsletters looking for audience growth mechanics. It solves list building, referrals, and ad monetisation better than almost anyone else in that specific niche. Just do not try to force it into an ecommerce tech stack where deep data and complex automations are required.
