Beehiiv vs Klaviyo: Which Email Platform Do You Need?

4 Mar 2025 · 3 min read

When Klaviyo is the obvious choice

If you run an ecommerce business selling physical products, pick Klaviyo over Beehiiv every single time. The core reason comes down to triggers, event tracking, and automation capabilities.

Klaviyo is built from the ground up to track real-time shopping actions. You can trigger complex flows when someone views a product, adds an item to cart, abandons checkout, or places an order. Beehiiv simply cannot match this level of behavioural automation because its automation engine is extremely basic.

If you sell supplements, apparel, or consumer goods, Beehiiv will hold you back. That is a mistake.

Where Beehiiv outperforms Klaviyo

Beehiiv was not built for online stores. It was built for newsletters, content creators, media brands, and B2B operators who want to build audience awareness and monetise readership directly.

In that specific lane, Beehiiv has two major features that Klaviyo lacks entirely:

  • The built-in ad network: Beehiiv connects you with sponsors who pay between $1.60 and $3.20 per click just for featuring their links in your send.
  • Native referral programmes: You can reward existing readers with digital products or perks when they refer friends, driving organic list growth at zero ad cost.

For influencer newsletters and direct audience building, you do not need granular ecommerce triggers. You just need clean delivery and strong distribution tools.

Design capabilities and visual flexibility

Design flexibility is another area where Klaviyo has a massive advantage. If you want beautifully branded, highly modular layouts with precise padding, dynamic product feeds, and custom blocks, Klaviyo is miles ahead.

Beehiiv is designed primarily for text-heavy, publication-style reading. While that minimal layout works well for a daily digest or personal essay, it falls short when you want to show off high-end lifestyle photography, curated product grids, or distinct brand identities.

In my books, an ecommerce welcome flow needs polished visual hierarchy. Creating that level of graphic detail inside Beehiiv is frustratingly difficult.

How I run a hybrid setup across both platforms

Because my business involves both digital product sales and content distribution, I actually use both platforms together. I capture leads on landing pages and route them into Klaviyo first, which triggers an automated onboarding flow spaced over roughly a 2-month period.

At the same time, I use a free Zapier integration to automatically pass new profiles from Klaviyo straight into Beehiiv. This gives me the best of both worlds without doubling my software overhead.

Here is how I keep costs down. I currently maintain around 1,922 subscribers in Beehiiv on a $60 monthly plan. Inside Klaviyo, once a subscriber completes their onboarding flow, I suppress them so my active billable count sits at just 461 profiles on a $20 monthly tier. It takes a little setup, but it keeps my Klaviyo bill minimal while letting me broadcast weekly newsletters and collect ad revenue through Beehiiv.

Final Thoughts

Use Klaviyo if you sell physical products, need deep behavioural segmentation, or want full control over your email automations. Use Beehiiv if your primary goal is running a monetised newsletter with built-in referral mechanics. Do not force an ecommerce brand onto Beehiiv just because the subscription pricing looks attractive.
