How to Use AI to Design High-Converting Email Header Images

10 Apr 2025 · 3 min read

Source a reference layout that already works

You do not need to design email headers from a blank canvas. The fastest way to get a clean result out of AI is to feed it a proven visual structure first.

Grab a header image from an email campaign you like. You can pull this from your own swipe file (I keep a personal database of 639 ecommerce email examples) or browse public design repositories. The goal is finding a composition with strong visual balance between product placement, typography, and negative space.

Once you pick a reference, export it at 2x resolution so the image model has crisp edges and clear contrast to analyse. Then, grab a clean shot of the actual product you want to feature. Save both files as standard JPEG or PNG assets.

Extract your brand identity with ChatGPT

Before asking the tool to generate graphics, you need to teach it what your brand looks like. Most people skip this step and get generic, messy outputs as a result. That is a mistake.

Drop your website URL into ChatGPT and ask it to describe your brand aesthetic in detail. Specifically, prompt it to analyse your colour palette, typography style, visual hierarchy, and overall mood.

If the first response is too broad, push it to go deeper. You want concrete details about background textures, contrast levels, and framing. Copy that entire output. You will use it directly inside your image generation prompt to keep the final render strictly on-brand.

Build the multi-image generation prompt

ChatGPT needs clear positional context to understand which image is the layout guide and which image is your product. Upload both files into the chat window in a specific order: reference header first (left), product shot second (right).

In your prompt, specify the exact canvas dimensions, such as a 600x400 pixel banner. Instruct the model to take the structural layout from the reference image on the left, but replace the original product and branding with the product on the right and your extracted brand aesthetic.

Paste the brand styling notes you generated earlier straight into the prompt. Direct the tool to maintain sharp image quality, realistic lighting, and clean background separation.

Keep your on-image copy under five words

AI image generators have improved significantly, but long strings of text will still turn into illegible gibberish. You need to keep text prompts minimal.

In my books, sticking to five words or fewer is the sweet spot. Simple phrases like "New Product Release" or "Back In Stock" render cleanly without warped letterforms. If you try to force an entire value proposition into the image generation prompt, it will fail.

Do not ask the AI to generate your call-to-action button inside the image either. Generate the background and hero product shot here, then place your actual clickable CTA button directly below the image inside Klaviyo using native blocks.

Refine the render and export

Review the generated asset closely. AI image generation is iterative, meaning around 20% of your initial renders will have minor visual glitches or odd artefacting around product edges.

If the layout is close but the text is slightly distorted, ask the model to re-render while holding the background constant. If the product shape is inaccurate, adjust your secondary reference image to show a cleaner cut-out on a neutral background.

Once you get a clean render, drop it into your email template. You now have a custom, high-end header asset produced in roughly five minutes without waiting days for external design turnarounds.

Final Thoughts

Using AI for email headers is not about replacing good design taste. It is about accelerating the production process by feeding the model clear references, defined brand rules, and concise copy. When you control the inputs, you get high-converting assets every single time.
