What to A/B Test in Your Email Marketing Campaigns

12 Jun 2024 · 3 min read

The Subject Line Testing Trap

Most ecommerce brands waste their split tests on campaign subject lines. I audit dozens of Klaviyo accounts every month, and nearly all of them are running A/B tests on two slightly different subject lines for a one-off promotional send.

It feels productive because you get a clear winner inside Klaviyo. The problem is that the data is almost useless by tomorrow morning.

Campaigns are topic-based. If you test a 50% discount subject line against a curiosity angle on a Tuesday flash sale, what did you actually learn? You cannot reliably take that learning and apply it to next week's new product drop. That is a mistake.

The Two Tests That Actually Move the Needle

For roughly 90% of ecommerce businesses, campaign testing should come down to two variables: send times and email design elements. Unless you have millions of subscribers where tiny margin shifts on copy produce massive swings, stick to these two.

Send times and design structures give you repeatable data. When you find a winning send time or a high-converting layout block, you can roll that winner across every single send for the next quarter.

How to Dial In Your Send Times

Finding your optimal send window is simple if you start wide and narrow it down systematically. Most accounts default to 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM because someone told them that was standard practice.

Start with a wide spread:

  • Round 1: Test 9:00 AM against 5:00 PM.
  • Round 2: If 9:00 AM wins, test 9:00 AM against 12:00 PM.
  • Round 3: If 12:00 PM takes the lead, test 12:00 PM against 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM.

Once you locate your brand's sweet spot, lock it in as your default campaign send time. You have now improved performance across every send going forward without guessing.

Testing Design Blocks Over a Full Month

The biggest split testing mistake on designs is testing two layouts on a single send and calling a winner. You do not have enough statistical significance on one campaign, even with a decent list.

For one of our clients with a database of around 40,000 subscribers, we wanted to test how product recommendations performed inside campaign templates. We built two variations: Version A featured their standard product grid, while Version B introduced a refreshed bestsellers dynamic block.

Instead of running it on one email, we ran that exact design test across an entire month of campaigns. That gave us solid, unquestionable data.

Implementing Your Learnings Systematically

When the month concluded, Version B clearly outperformed Version A on click-to-open rate and revenue per recipient. Because the data was consistent across multiple sends, we had complete confidence in the result.

The following month, we rolled that winning dynamic block into every campaign template and even updated the core flow emails. We locked in the baseline lift, then picked a completely new design variable to test for the next 30 days.

This is how testing is supposed to work. You find a winner, make it the new standard, and move on to the next hypothesis.

Save Copy Tests for Flows

I am not against testing copy and subject lines altogether. But in my books, copy testing belongs inside your automated flows, not your one-off campaigns.

Flows run continuously in the background for months on end. If you test a subject line inside your abandoned checkout flow and find a variation that boosts opens by 4%, that improvement works for you automatically on thousands of future shoppers.

Keep your campaign testing focused on macro structural improvements. Flows are for copy; campaigns are for timing and layouts.

Final Thoughts

Stop running disposable subject line tests on your weekly broadcasts. Focus your campaign split testing on dialing in send times and validating repeatable design blocks over 30-day cycles. When you implement winning structures across your entire account, your revenue gains compound over time.
