Why Manual Discount Codes Hurt Your Conversion Rate
Forcing a subscriber to copy and paste a promo code at checkout is bad customer experience. When someone clicks a link in your email, goes to your store, adds an item to cart, and reaches checkout, they should not have to hunt for their coupon. If they forget the code and leave checkout to dig through their inbox, there is a strong chance they get distracted and never finish the purchase.
That is friction, and friction kills revenue. In my books, you want to make it as effortless as possible for someone to hand you their money.
The simplest way to eliminate this drop-off is to format your links so Shopify automatically applies the discount when the customer arrives on your site. Once you configure your URLs correctly in Klaviyo, the price drops automatically at checkout without the buyer typing a single character.
Setting Up Static Auto-Apply Links in Shopify
If you use a universal discount code that everyone shares (such as GET10 for 10% off), setting up auto-apply links is remarkably straightforward. Shopify supports native discount routing right out of the box.
All you need to do is append /discount/YOURCODE immediately after your primary domain. For example, if your store is brand.com and your static discount code is GET10, your URL becomes:
https://brand.com/discount/GET10
When a subscriber clicks that link, Shopify drops a cookie in their browser, applies the discount to their session, and redirects them to the homepage or target product page. As soon as they navigate to checkout, the 10% discount is already sitting in the order summary.
One thing I like to do is add a quick note right beneath the CTA button in the email, such as "Discount automatically applied at checkout". It reassures the buyer and prevents them from stalling.
Auto-Applying Static Discounts in Abandoned Checkout Flows
Standard links work well for regular campaigns and welcome emails, but checkout recovery flows require slightly different handling. In an abandoned checkout flow, Klaviyo relies on a dynamic URL to send the shopper straight back to the cart they left behind.
By default, Klaviyo inserts a fallback tag like this:
{{ event.extra.checkout_url }}
That default tag takes them back to their items, but it does not carry your discount across. To attach a static discount code like GET10 to that dynamic checkout session, update the link destination on your button to this format:
{{ event.extra.checkout_url }}&discount=GET10
If you run separate desktop and mobile blocks inside Klaviyo's template editor, remember to update the button link on both layouts. Missing the mobile version is an easy mistake that costs real revenue on launch day.
Handling Dynamic Klaviyo Coupons on General Links
Static codes are easy to manage, but they have a clear downside: people share them on coupon scraper sites. If you want to protect your margins, you should use dynamic unique coupon codes generated inside Klaviyo.
To create one, navigate to Coupons in Klaviyo, select Add Coupon, link it to your Shopify store, and define your rule (for instance, 10% off the entire order). Give your coupon definition a clear name, such as Welcome10.
To build an auto-apply link using a unique dynamic code across standard campaigns or welcome flows, structure your button URL like this:
https://brand.com/discount/{% coupon_code 'Welcome10' %}
When Klaviyo renders and sends the email, it replaces the tag with a unique single-use string for each recipient. When the subscriber clicks through, Shopify applies that specific code to their cart automatically.
Auto-Applying Unique Coupons in Abandoned Checkout Flows
Combining unique dynamic coupon codes with dynamic abandoned checkout links is where many brands get tripped up. The syntax needs to be exact, otherwise Shopify will throw an invalid code error at checkout.
To append a dynamically generated Klaviyo coupon code to an abandoned checkout recovery link, use this structure:
{{ event.extra.checkout_url }}&discount={% coupon_code 'YourCouponName' %}
Replace YourCouponName with the exact name of the coupon definition you set up under the Coupons tab in Klaviyo. Do not change the surrounding quotation marks or bracket formatting.
Before you turn the flow live, send a live test email to yourself from within Klaviyo. Click the link in an incognito window and confirm that the checkout loads with both the abandoned line items and the dynamic coupon code applied.
Final Thoughts
Auto-applying discount codes removes unnecessary friction from your highest-intent touchpoints. Whether you use universal static codes or unique dynamic vouchers, updating your Klaviyo link structures takes roughly 5 minutes per flow and delivers an immediate lift in checkout completion rates. Test your links in an incognito tab before pushing them live, and make the buying process completely seamless.
