Connecting OpenSend to Klaviyo
Before you touch Klaviyo, ensure the OpenSend pixel and Shopify app are installed on your site. Once that baseline tracking is running, your first step is creating a dedicated API key inside Klaviyo so OpenSend can push identified profiles into your database.
Head into your Klaviyo account, navigate to Settings > API Keys, and select Create Private API Key. Give it a custom name like 'OpenSend' so you always know what owns it.
Set your permissions deliberately. OpenSend requires full access to Lists and Profiles, alongside read access for Metrics, Events, and Templates. Copy the generated key, jump back into OpenSend, add Klaviyo as a destination, paste the key, and validate the connection.
Setting Up Your Dedicated Destination List
Never dump third-party identity resolution contacts directly into your main newsletter list. That is a mistake.
Create a dedicated list inside Klaviyo specifically for these synced contacts. At In-box, we name this list IB -- OpenSend. Inside OpenSend, map your synced contacts directly to this newly created list, set your tag, and hit publish.
Make sure you adjust the list settings in Klaviyo immediately. Navigate to Settings > Consent on the new list and switch it to single opt-in. If double opt-in remains active, your synced profiles will sit in limbo without receiving your automations.
Cloning and Filtering Your Welcome Series
Because these profiles enter your account through identity resolution rather than a standard on-site signup form, you must run them through a separate Welcome Series. Clone your existing Welcome Series and name the new flow Welcome Series - OpenSend.
Set the trigger to your dedicated OpenSend list. Next, you need a critical flow filter to avoid sending mixed messages to people who already know your brand.
Add a trigger filter with the following rule:
- What somebody has or has not done > Received email > where Flow equals [Your Main Welcome Series] > 0 times over all time.
OpenSend will occasionally identify existing subscribers who revisit your site. Without this filter, an existing customer might suddenly receive a beginner welcome discount they used six months ago.
Splitting Your Abandonment Flows
Next, you need to duplicate your Browse Abandonment and Abandoned Checkout flows. An identified OpenSend visitor needs separate tracking so you can measure whether the software actually drives incremental profit.
Clone your live Abandoned Checkout flow and your Browse Abandonment flow. Name the duplicates clearly with an 'OpenSend' suffix.
Now apply strict list filters to both sets of flows:
- For your OpenSend flows: Add the flow filter If someone is in OpenSend list.
- For your regular live flows: Add the flow filter If someone is NOT in OpenSend list.
This simple split keeps your audiences clean. A shopper either qualifies for your standard store recovery emails or the OpenSend variations, never both simultaneously.
The Truth About OpenSend Attribution
Here is the thing about identity resolution tools: their native dashboards love claiming credit. Attribution is always messy, but third-party platforms tend to be especially generous with their own numbers.
In one client account, OpenSend reported 965 resolved identities and claimed $845 in placed order value. The catch? Those orders came through before OpenSend had sent a single automation email. Klaviyo was already capturing that revenue naturally.
Do not rely on the OpenSend dashboard for true performance metrics. Instead, use Klaviyo revenue as your single source of truth. Check the revenue generated specifically by your cloned OpenSend flows over a 7-day or 30-day window. In that same client example, the actual Klaviyo flow revenue was $424. That is your real number.
Final Thoughts
Integrating OpenSend with Klaviyo takes less than fifteen minutes, but setting up the segmentation safeguards is where brands win or lose. Keep your lists distinct, split your abandonment automations, and evaluate your numbers inside Klaviyo rather than an external dashboard.
