How to Use ChatGPT for Better Klaviyo Email Campaigns

3 Sept 2023 · 3 min read

Start by Upgrading to GPT-4

If you are still using the free version of ChatGPT to write email marketing campaigns, you are making your life harder than it needs to be. In my books, paying roughly $20 a month for GPT-4 is a no-brainer because the reasoning and context retention are far superior. It makes fewer logical errors and actually follows instructions.

You will not get usable direct-to-consumer email ideas out of a model that defaults to generic corporate suggestions. You need precision, and the paid model gets you significantly closer to what a real copywriter would produce.

The Two-Step Prompting Method

One thing I like to do before asking for actual output is to prime the model. Most people dump a massive, messy prompt into ChatGPT and wonder why the result is completely off the mark.

Instead, tell the AI what you plan to do first and ask if it understands. For example, tell it: "I am going to ask you to write campaign ideas for an ecommerce brand that sells foot care products promoting active lifestyles. Do you understand?"

Waiting for that confirmation forces the model to lock into the context before it starts generating copy. It sounds simple, but it saves hours of back-and-forth prompt corrections.

Steering Away From Generic PR Ideas

When you ask AI for email campaign ideas, its default setting is usually terrible for direct-to-consumer ecommerce. It will suggest things like partnering with local marathons, targeting schools, or launching community initiatives. Those might work for a corporate PR team, but they do not sell products in an email inbox.

That is a mistake.

You need to steer the model immediately toward educational and value-led content. I typically prompt it to generate 4 to 5 informational campaigns per month focused on specific pain points, such as foot anatomy, posture support, or senior mobility. This gives you a structured content series that nurtures subscribers rather than just blasting them with discounts.

Analysing Your Real Tone of Voice

AI copy sounds robotic because people let it guess their brand voice. To get copy that actually sounds like your brand, grab a few paragraphs from your website (your About Us page or your top-performing product descriptions) and feed them directly into the chat.

Ask ChatGPT to analyse the tone of voice first. It will break down the cadence, vocabulary, and perspective of your writing. Once it defines that tone, instruct it to write your email campaign using those exact stylistic rules.

Drafting and Aggressively Editing the Output

Once the model understands the angle and the tone, ask for the full campaign asset list: subject line, preview text, header image concept, and body copy. You will get a complete first draft in around 30 seconds.

Now comes the most important rule: never send raw AI copy to your list. You have to edit it with a heavy hand. Look out for these common AI writing traps:

  • Ditch the formal greetings: Remove "Dear [Name]" immediately. Nobody talks like that in modern direct-to-consumer email.
  • Cut corporate sign-offs: Delete placeholders like "[Your Name], Founder" at the end of promotional emails.
  • Strip out hollow adjectives: AI loves words like "delve", "unleash", and "game-changer". Cut them out.

Google and major inbox providers are getting remarkably smart at filtering out generic AI-generated content. If you do not edit your emails, your deliverability will eventually take a hit.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT is a fantastic tool for getting past writer's block and generating a month of Klaviyo campaign concepts in roughly 15 minutes. Use it for structure, angles, and initial drafts, but keep your hands on the steering wheel. The real value comes from your editing.
